Hello and Welcome to THEN UK!
THEN UK or to give our full name - ‘The Home Education Network Uk’ is a recently founded national not for profit group aiming to provide support and resources for those families who have already chosen ‘education otherwise than at schoo’l or are looking to find further information about ‘Home Education’ as a choice for their children.
Home Education is on the increase: Parents are increasingly teaching their children at home amid growing dissatisfaction with the quality of state schools according to a recent Government-backed research. A study published recently said at least 16,000 youngsters in England are believed to be receiving a home based education - a three fold increase since 1999. The study showed that many parents are worried about bullying, poor discipline and are unhappy with the quality of teaching (according to the study by York Consulting). The report commissioned by the Department for Education found that children tended to be removed from state education between finishing primary and starting secondary school.
No matter how you found out about ‘Home Education’ you owe it to your self and your children to find out more. At THEN UK we have a yahoo group where you can chat and discuss home education, ask questions in your bid to find out more about your choices and if you do decide to home educate we also list a vast number of resources: Home Education Blogs, Educational Websites, Regional & National Yahoo Groups for home educators, online games, free worksheet downloads and crafts to name but a few. You do not have to be a member of THEN UK to gain access to our resources as this section of the group is open to all, however if you wish to talk to others in the same position as you you are very welcome to join the same open group by clicking on ‘Join this group’ when visiting.
One of the main reasons for setting up THEN UK was the lack of funding available to home educators. We therefore included within our membership fee a total of £3 each per year to be paid into our ‘Members Chest’. The more members there are, the more funds available.
The Members Chest - available to members will offer ‘a bit of financial help’. A set of books might be needed or some Educational Software. As we grow we could help with a broadband contract for 12 months or a distance learning course, as we keep growing we could help out with the cost of an external exam, a laptop or a language translator. The sky really is the limit and its all about working together to help each other achieve this. You can see our plans for the future here.
New to Home Education? Why not start at the beginning. Our Home Education page should help you as well as provide a phone contact should you wish to speak to a real person with your questions. We have a growing list of lovely volunteers; each experienced in education otherwise than at school or - home education as its known and ready willing and able to take your calls should you be looking for help. All of our volunteers are also CRB checked for your peace of mind and ours.
Our leaflet may also be of use to you at this early stage and a PDF document entitled; “Elective Home Education Guidelines’. This guide was recently issued to local authorities.
No matter if you are new to it all or an experienced home educator you are welcome to join us as a member of THEN UK (applications from outside the Uk are very welcome).
