A professional writer, English teacher, university tutor and home-educator, Catherine  recognised the need for a friendly, approachable distance learning course that would enable home-educated children to take a GCSE English Language exam, regardless of their ability or educational starting point.

The result was to offer her own IGCSE Course for Home-educators.  This course doesn’t presuppose any prior knowledge and unlike some correspondence courses, which can be dry in tone, it reflects the joy in learning which I feel should be part and parcel of any English course. There is practical guidance with exam technique, practice with past papers, 10 tutor marked assignments and unlimited (within reason!) phone and email support. You also have the option to add extra lessons if and when they are required. Parents get help and support too, and I have written a special chapter to demystify exam board requirements and help you find an exam centre.

The course is produced on paper and audio CD format, recognising that some children learn best by listening rather than reading. Throughout the course there are exercises to help you consolidate what you have learned. For more information, updates and free resources you can visit her website by following the links above.

It gives me VERY great pleasure to be able to announce that my IGCSE English Literature course for home educators is ready to take its first intake of students! You can see course samples and further details on my web-site at www.catherinemooneytutoring.co.uk

As I am sure you already know, English Literature is a wonderful IGSCE. Not only does it introduce students to some fantastic texts, but it sits happily alongside IGCSE English Language, sharing some of the writing tasks. If you are looking for a IGCSE that your child would enjoy, and you are also doing English Language, this could be a really good choice. The texts we will be studying are Pride and Prejudice, The Importance of Being Earnest and the Edexcel Anthology. I am very pleased to announce that I have also produced a fully annotated version of Pride and Prejudice, in book format, especially for 13 – 16 year old students. (It will be available to buy separately from Amazon from August 2009.)

The complete course will be available from September, but for those wanting to make an early start, the first component, Pride and prejudice, is available from the end of July.

As with my IGCSE English Language course, I have kept costs as low as is humanly possible and there is a further discount if you are already taking my IGCSE English Language course, and also for siblings. Additionally there is an easy payment option. Obviously with a literature course, extra texts and DVDs are required but I have been working hard to get the best possible prices and have produced a bundle of 2 set texts and 2 DVDs for £25!

Incidentally, apart from my OU work, I now work exclusively with home-educated children (they are so much more fun and brighter than their school peers; plus the standard of work is so much higher – and yes, you can quote me!).

If you have any questions please email me or you can phone  01952 605865.

Catherine

PS WordWeavers, the pre-IGCSE English course for 9+, will be available from early October.
